Professional engineering institutions set the standards for chartership, run student competitions, and connect you to a global community. Joining as a student is free or low-cost — and employers notice.

Professional Registration Explained

There are three levels of professional engineering registration in the UK, all governed by the Engineering Council. Each is awarded by a licensed Professional Engineering Institution (PEI) — not the Engineering Council itself.

EngTechEngineering Technician

The entry-level professional registration. An EngTech applies and maintains established engineering practice. It's a recognised qualification in its own right and a stepping stone toward IEng.

Typical requirements

Foundation of technical knowledge and skills
Typically HNC/HND or NVQ Level 3 equivalent
Demonstrated competence in a technical role
Commitment to ongoing professional development
IEngIncorporated Engineer

Demonstrates the ability to apply and extend established technology. IEngs often work in technical project management, design, or operational roles. A strong qualification respected across UK industry.

Typical requirements

BEng (Hons) or equivalent Level 6 qualification
Substantial period of responsible engineering experience
Application of established technology to engineering solutions
Professional review or interview with the licensing institution
CEngChartered Engineer

The highest level of professional engineering registration. CEngs develop original solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technology. Highly valued by employers, often tied to salary progression and senior roles.

Typical requirements

MEng or BEng plus further learning (MSc, CPD, learning agreement)
Significant engineering experience in a responsible role
Demonstrated innovation, leadership, and engineering judgement
Professional review with UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC)
Tip: Many engineering firms pay your membership fees and actively support you through chartership. Ask about this at interview — it signals long-term ambition.

Student membership is usually free or heavily discounted. Joining gives you access to competitions, networking events, scholarships, and a recognised credential on your CV.

Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical, Manufacturing, Automotive, Aerospace

How to Join as a Student

The process is straightforward and takes under 15 minutes for most institutions.

STEP 1
Choose your institution
Pick the body most relevant to your engineering discipline. You can join more than one.
STEP 2
Register online
Most institutions have a student membership form. You'll need your university name and course.
STEP 3
Get your membership number
Add it to your CV and LinkedIn. Some institutions provide a printed certificate.
STEP 4
Engage actively
Attend events, enter competitions, and use resources. Passive membership won't impress anyone.
